How to Make Your Business Go Green

Author: Vibha Babbar

So how important do you think it is for your business to go green? Just another humanitarian duty? I wonder if most of us consider it as important as gaining new projects/clients in a business! The statement may sound hypothetical, but an ‘environmental friendly’ business is often ‘profit friendly’ too. Such businesses not only address the environmental issues, but also make your business reduce its costs. I’m listing 2-3 common; perhaps noticed yet ignored ways of making a business environmental friendly, with a hope that people view them as an intrinsic part of their business growth. Reduce Paper Wastage - Paper wastage, especially in Indian Business firms, has created a menace. Look around any office premise, and you could view piles of papers generated and circulated on regular basis. True that there can’t be a “Paperless office”, be it e-commerce, banking and finance, medicine or manufacturing industry. In spite of the introduction of Internet, mails and chat messengers, paper still plays an important role in businesses, and I see no chances of its minimizing role in the near future. But the optimum utilization is something that really can help businesses. Buying high quality white printing paper also helps in the recycling process. High quality recyclable paper can easily be recycled, thereby helping you save both money and paper. Printing on both sides of the paper obviously helps- it lets you save 1.2p of white and black, and around 13p of colored ink costs. In addition, do away with the sticky notes and reminders hanging on your work desk- use digital documents instead. Reduce and Save Energy - There are few extremely easy ways that help save energy. Switching off your computer monitor, avoiding the use of unnecessary screen savers, etc., would help in curtailing carbon emission. The fact is, every time you use computer, you are contributing in the depletion of the ozone layer. The figure may be shocking but true- while a computer takes about 1.8 tonnes of poisonous chemicals and fossils fuels in its manufacturing, it emits somewhere around 0.1 tonnes of CO2 in a year! So when you are leaving your computer screen on, remember that you are somewhere responsible for increasing the CO2 level! Use Plants - Keeping plants in the office area not only makes your office look nicer, but absorbs the air pollutants as well. With the air conditioners on almost 24*7 in the office, and so many people breathing and exhaling in the same hall, plants play a life saving role. It helps absorb the air pollutants and the negative ions relieved by the computers. Many Indian businesses including SMEs are undertaking various Go Green campaigns. Many environmental projects are also being carried out (as part of the umbrella schemes for the Asian region). This surely paves a way for a more greener business atmosphere. On this positive note, let’s pledge to make businesses environmental friendly, and do the maximum from our end.
